Freeze Dried Coffee vs a Bean-to-Cup Machine

Choosing coffee for home, work or a gift? Start with how you want to prepare it.

Freeze-dried coffee is a type of instant coffee

Instant coffee is made from brewed coffee that is dried into a soluble form. Freeze-drying is one drying method. It describes the format, rather than proving that one coffee tastes better than another.

Format Preparation What to check
Freeze-dried instant coffee Add coffee and hot water to a cup and stir. No coffee machine or grinder required. Pack weight, ingredients, price and the strength you prefer.
Ground coffee Brew using a suitable method, such as a cafetière or filter brewer. Choose a grind suited to your brewing equipment.
Coffee pods or capsules Use the capsule or pod in its compatible machine. Check the exact machine system before buying.

Freeze Dried Coffee vs a Bean-to-Cup Machine

A bean-to-cup machine grinds whole beans and brews your drink. Velare is soluble coffee: add water and stir. These are different preparations, so the figures below compare costs, not equivalent taste or drink strength.

Machine purchase cost

As a current UK example, De’Longhi lists the Magnifica Evo ECAM290.83.TB EX:1 at £579.99. This is one model, not a market-wide minimum. Velare’s £22.95 Duo needs no coffee machine; allow for a cup, spoon and a way to heat water.

Cost per cup: show the dose and the equipment

Tesco Italian Inspired Espresso Coffee Beans 1kg costs £14.25, excluding multi-buy offers. For an illustrative 8g bean dose, coffee alone costs 11.4p. At an illustrative 2g soluble-coffee dose, Velare’s 200g Duo makes 100 servings at 22.95p each before delivery. These dose assumptions are for arithmetic, not a claim that the drinks have identical strength.

Illustrative basis Cost per drink
Beans: £14.25/kg × 8g 11.4p, coffee only
Beans plus £579.99 machine spread over 1,000 drinks 69.4p before other running costs
Velare: £22.95 ÷ 100 servings at 2g 22.95p, coffee only

The machine allocation changes with the number of drinks: £579.99 ÷ total drinks made. If you already own a machine, its purchase price may already be paid. Milk, electricity, water, delivery, filters, cleaning products, repairs, wasted coffee and financing are excluded from these examples. Higher doses increase coffee cost per drink.

Cleaning and descaling

Bean-to-cup ownership includes emptying grounds and drip trays, cleaning the brewing unit and maintaining any milk system. Follow the model’s manual and water-hardness settings. De’Longhi’s Magnifica care guidance describes rinsing the removable brewing unit and following descaling prompts. The Evo listing also describes a milk-cleaning function after use.

For a UK consumable example, De’Longhi Decalk Care 500ml is currently £7.99 for five 100ml doses: about £1.60 per descale, before delivery. Descaling frequency varies; no fixed annual cost is assumed. With Velare there is no coffee brewing unit, grounds bin or milk circuit to maintain; wash the cup and spoon and maintain your kettle as usual.
